Interesting Dialogue from Adoration (2008)

So early this morning i download Adoration, a 2008 drama movie directed by Atom Egoyan. It was first shown in May 2008 at Cannes film Festival. This is what the movie about according to Wikipedia:

French high school teacher Sabine gives her class a translation exercise based on a real news story about a terrorist who plants a bomb in the airline luggage of his pregnant girlfriend, which would have killed her, her unborn child, and many others, but was discovered in time. In the course of translating, Simon, who lives with his uncle Tom, imagines that the news item is his own family's story, where his Palestinian father Sami was the terrorist, the woman was his mother Rachel, an accomplished violinist, and he was her unborn child. Years ago, Sami crashed the family car, killing both himself and Rachel, making Simon an orphan. Influenced by his racist grandfather (we see Simon filming him with his mobile phone when he talks to him), Simon has always feared that the crash was not an accident but intentional. Simon reads his version to the class. Sabine asks him to develop the story as a drama exercise, and for dramatic effect pretend that it really happened. So he does, and discussions evolve on the Internet about the story.

I'm not even finished watching this movie, but there's a bit of interesting dialogue in the beginning half of this movie that grab my attention. I think it gracefully capture the never-ending debate over the acceptance of different values in religion and beliefs.

If it's not, then at least it captures how even in 2009, where all methods of communication have been here for some time, with all information, whether it's true or not, are practically readily served on our table, still, judgement on cultures and beliefs are being made on a personal, positive or negative thinking based instead of using that data.

On the other hand, maybe we cannot make a judgement on data. We see what we wanted to see. We are a creatures of perception.

So  there's a lady wearing islamic dress, driving around a section of town where the film's main character, Simon, and his uncle Tom lives. Their christmas decoration captures her attention, and she stops and start making conversation about religion that ends badly, with Tom telling the lady to leave them alone. Then on the next day, she came back to apologize. This is the bit that interesting for me from their conversation:

Tom: So why did you come to this part of the city?

Lady: I was just driving around and i saw your decorations.

Tom: You were just driving around on your own?

Lady: I do that sometimes.
When i saw this public display of your faith, it touched me.

Tom: Why?

Lady: I feel people staring at me all the time, wondering why I would make such a visible statement of my belief.

Tom: Where i come from, it's completely natural.

Lady: Here, it threatens.

Tom: And that surprises you?

Lady: Yes.

Tom: Like a woman in a bikini wouldn't threaten you people?

Lady: Us people?

Tom: (nervous laugh) Mayble people really should stick to their own kind.

This movie is amazing. I think there's even more interesting dialogue from this movie than this.

Thank you Gramma

Mama....
Entah seperti apa
banyak kata, lama cara,
atau susunan cara bicara
yang bisa kami katakan

Engkau seperti bulan
temaram, ditengah gelap
menerangi kami yang takut
sendirian berdiri ditengah bintang

Menemani kami berkelip,
membantu kami bersinar
diammu adalah seribu kata
untuk kami yang senantiasa takut
kehilangan.

Delapan puluh satu,
di ufuk barat terlihat merah

Delapan puluh satu,
saatnya bulan meninggalkan kenang

Untukmu segala bintang,
berubah jadi matahari.

Ucap kami hanya menyisa
terima kasih, mama, selamat jalan.
Engkau akan selalu ada dihati kami.
